Laura Garza didn’t have to die in the early morning hours Wednesday December 3rd. She died because she placed her own life at risk when she decided to leave from a nightclub with a man she really didn’t know. Laura was new to the New York area, yes, but she was also twenty-five years old. Twenty-five is old enough to know better; but then again, what reason would Laura have had to beleive that Michael Mele was going to kill her? Killers don’t wear signs; and women leave from clubs with men all the time and don’t get killed. Why should Laura have stopped to consider the possibility that she might be putting herself in danger if there were no obvious signs?

Clearly Laura Garza didn’t think her life was in danger. Michael Mele was a charmer according to all accounts. He was handsome and he had money if driving a Ferrari, a BMW and an Infinity SUV is any indication. Laura Garza, a small-town girl who left Texas in search of big city glitz and glamor was probably very impressed on all counts.

Unfortunately for Laura, Michael Mele turned out to be the proverbial wolf in sheep’s clothing. Laura Garza made the mistake of trusting a man she met at a club enough to leave the club with him and go back to his place. While police have not yet found her body, they are pretty well convinced that Laura Garza is dead and Micheal Mele killed her.

Perhaps this can be a lesson to women of all ages never to take your safety for granted, even with men you do know, but especially with men you don’t know. Value your life and your physical security more highly than your need for excitement.
