Who are the Deccan Mujahideen?

You might have heard about the attacks in Mumbai India yesterday and also heard that the Deccan Mujahideen has claimed responsibility for the attacks. If you are looking for information on the Deccan Mujahideen, I’ve done a little digging myself, and here is what I have learned about the terrorist group: The Deccan Mujahideen claim to be an Islamic terrorist group based in India. Until yesterday’s attack it does not appear this group has ever been heard from before and reports about them refer to them as “alleged” because there has been no confirmation from any trustworthy source that this group in fact exists.

It has been suggested that if this group does in fact exist they might be related to the Indian Mujahideen which is a known Islamic terrorist group in India.

The group’s name might suggest a link to the Deccan Plateau in southern India. The Deccan plateau includes the states of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The word Mujahideen is an Arabic word derived from “jihad”. It means “strugglers”.
