Some employees of Verizon Wireless have found themselves in hot water after it was revealed that they accessed and viewed President-elect Barack Obama’s cell phone records without authorization.
On Thursday, Verizon’s president and CEO, Lowell McAdam revealed in a statement, “This week we learned that a number of Verizon Wireless employees have, without authorization, accessed and viewed President-Elect Barack Obama’s personal cell phone account.”
McAdam stated that the employees guilty of the breach of trust have been put on immediate leave. There is an internal probe into the matter to ascertain whether or not Obama’s information was only shared between the employees who accessed and viewed his information or if the information was also shared with people outside the company. The Secret Service and “appropriate federal law enforcement authorities” have been notified; however there does not at this time appear to be a federal investigation underway.
At this time it is believed that the employees looked at billing records and that no voicemail or email was accessed.
