Reason for arrest: Killing his 2 year old son
Victim’s name: Zjaire Williams (pronounced Zaire)
Where the crime occurred: Montgomery County, Washington D.C.
Motive for murder: Although the state medical examiner’s office has ruled the death of Zjaire Williams a homicide due to injuries to his head and stomach, this does not read like a case of murder. From the details of the story it sounds more like child’s death might have been accidental. Police say that the detectives who arrived on the scene were told that after watching television together for a while, father and son went to sleep on two separate sofas in the living room. When the father, Darryl Powell, woke up early the next morning he found his son lying face down on the floor and was unable to wake him.
Other Details: Daryll Powell is currently being held without bond in the county jail. Zjaire Williams’ mother Todzja Williams was also 17. The child had lived with his mother and grandmother LaSonia “Monique” Williams and had been visiting overnight with his father.
LaSonia Williams (speaking to the Washington Post about the child’s death) - “We are beyond devastated. He was a beautiful, happy, vibrant, curly-haired little boy, the light of our lives.”
Impression: There’s really not enough information about this case at this point to form an impression; but from the few details circulating, it sounds as if Zjaire Williams might have fallen off the sofa in the middle of the night and sustained a fatal blow to the head; but one wonders how far from the floor can the sofa possibly have been to make it possible for the child to suffer a blow to the head severe enough to kill him, and to injure his abdomen in addition? Furthermore, what could account for the other bruises to the child’s body and the cuts on his lips? It’s impossible to guess what might have happened here. The only thing certain is that another child is dead and a teenage boy is in jail being charged with his murder. Whether it was an accident or intentional more needs to be done to save children in this country from becoming victims of parental abuse and neglect.

Accidental? Yeah, the father accidentally beat the child to death. the kid was probably crying or making too much noise while the father was playing his xbox.

well im one of his sisters and ive never known him to hurt any child, so what people need to stop doin is assumeing cuz when you assume it makes you look stupid, y is everybody tryna make it seem like it was him y couldnt it be the mother, my nefew is gone and i never got to meet him, and thats becuz everytime i turned around an talked to my brother he was tellin me how the mother wasnt tryna let him see his son so yall r looking at the wrong parent if u ask me.
