Rod Blagojevich, the governor of Illinois was arrested by the FBI today, along with his chief of staff John Harris.

Blagojevich and Harris are facing charges of corruption, including a charge of conspiring to sell the senate seat recently vacated by president elect Barack Obama .

According to the FBI, Blagojevich, 51, was caught on wiretaps discussing selling the Obama senate seat in exchange for financial benefits for himself and his wife.

The Chicago Tribune reports that Blagojevich and Harris are being accused of “wide-ranging criminal conspiracy.”

U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald is quoted as saying:

“The breadth of corruption laid out in these charges is staggering.”

“They [the charges] allege that Blagojevich put a ‘for sale’ sign on the naming of a United States senator; involved himself personally in pay-to-play schemes with the urgency of a salesman meeting his annual sales target; and corruptly used his office in an effort to trample editorial voices of criticism.”

Blagojevich was arrested at his home in North Side.
