Students who can’t pay lunch bill being denied hot lunches

The Steamboat Springs School district in Steamboat Springs Colorado is apparently cracking down on deadbeat children who haven’t paid the bill on their lunch account. They are implementing a zero tolerance policy and refusing access to certain menu items to anyone owing six or more dollars on their lunch accounts.

What they appear to be saying by taking this position: “You want pizza, pay up sucker. This is no soup kitchen. Go home and tell you momma to get a third job so she can pay the money she owes us. You poor people…sitting on your…trying to get everything for free. No hot lunch for you. That’ll teach your momma about the consequences of not getting a college education!”

In case it’s not obvious, I think it’s a shame that the Steamboat Springs School district is choosing to take this route. I’m willing to bet that with a little effort they could come up with an innovative solution that avoids having to deprive and humiliate the poor students.
