Should sex offenders be castrated?

Police in New York continue their search for Laura Garza, the 25-year old Brooklyn woman who disappeared last Wednesday after leaving from Manhattan’s Marquee night club with a man she didn’t know was a convicted sex offender. Police are pretty sure that Laura Garza will not be found alive. They believe Michael Mele killed her in his Wallkill, New York apartment.

It has come to light since the disappearance of Laura Garza that Michael Mele has committed numerous sexual offenses since 2005. He pleaded guilty in October 2007 to charges of attacks on women at the Palisades Center mall. The attacks involved Mele cornering the women and masturbating in front of them.

He has also been suspected of masturbating in front of women at the Paramus Park mall in New Jersey and in Danbury, Connecticut. He has never faced any punishment more severe than his October 2007 probation sentence; and even if he had spent time in jail and had been in therapy for years, it still would not have guaranteed that Laura Garza’s encounter with him would not have turned fatal.

If most sex offenders continue to offend despite time spent in jail and mandatory years of psychotherapy, would it not be better for all concerned, including the offender, that the punishment for sex crimes be castration? What do you think?  If you cut off the organs of male sex offenders they have no weapon with which to terrorize new victims.

Do you think male sex offenders should be castrated?
