A mother from Stonegate, a town in South-East England, is suspected of killing her 31-year old daughter. The murder is believe to have taken place last week and the motive is believed to have something to do with the fact that the daughter has been suffering from Myalgic Encephalopathy for more than half her life.
Kay Gilderdale was arrested on suscpision of killing her seriously ill daughter Lynn Gilderdale. It has not been so stated but it would appear that this was a mercy killing committed by a mother who could no longer bear to watch her daughter suffer the debilitating effects of Myalgic Encephalopahty.
In 2006, speaking about her daughter’s condition, Kay Gilderdale reportedly stated:
“If I didn’t believe, and she didn’t believe, that one day she would get better then I don’t think it would be right for her to go on suffering like this for a whole lifespan of 70 or 80 years.”
“If someone dies, you mourn them, then you get to a stage where you know that person is gone and you move on. But Lynn is neither one nor the other. She is stuck in that room, not dead, but not alive properly.”
Lynn Gilderdale had been bedridden for 16 years, living with constant pain and unable to speak. She required 24-hour care. That care was provided by her mother who, last week, decided 17 years of suffering was more than enough. She was arrested but released on bail until March 2009, pending further inquiries into the death of her daughter.
