From urine and sweat to drinking water

Would you drink water knowing that before it was water it was urine and sweat, even while knowing that before it was urine and sweat it was water? Apparently that’s exactly what astronauts might start doing in the near future. For now they are just producing samples of drinking water recycled from urine and sweat for testing purposes.

According to published reports the crew on the International Space Station recently installed a WRS system that will be used in conjunction with a $19 million dollar toilet to transform urine and sweat into drinking water. The astronauts already have months of liquid waste material saved up for the experiment.

The intention is to develop a system whereby astronauts in space can recycle their urine and sweat and consume the drinking water produced. Being able to turn their urine and sweat back into water will apparently enable astronauts to remain longer on space missions. Read more about this
