Should Britney’s song If U Seek Amy get censored?

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

As you probably know Britney Spear’s new album “Circus” was released back at Thanksgiving; and one of the tracks is titled “If U Seek Amy”. If you’ve listened to the track then you’ve probably realized by now that If U Seek Amy stands for something else. The ‘If’ stands for the letter “F”, the U is used in context of the word “you” but actually represents the letter “U”, and the “Seek Amy” represents a fusion of the letters C and K and the word “me”. Hopefully that’s spelled out plainly enough for even the most slow to process brain. Britney is actually using the “If You Seek Amy” to say something that she couldn’t have said plainly without her song getting censored.

My Question:

Should Britney Spears' song 'If U Seek Amy' be subject to censorship?

Out Of Control by Girls Aloud

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Out of Control is the title of the fifth studio album from the British female pop group Girls Aloud. The album was released on November 3rd and debuted at #1 on the UK Albums Chart with the single “The Promise”, released back in October, having topped the charts. Depending on who you ask the “Out of Control” by Girls Aloud is either another “excellent” effort from Girls Aloud, or it is  “bland and devoid of personality or expression”.( metacritic.com)

Caroline Sullivan writing for theguardian.co.uk: “…despite ear-catching touches such as the deadpan voiceover on Love Is the Key, nothing hits the spot like the Phil Spector-like single The Promise, one of this year’s better chart-toppers. If you own that, you’ve already got Out of Control’s best four minutes.”

Andy Gill writing for theindependent.co.uk: “I realise that, through either fear or irony, we’re all supposed to make out as if we love Girls Aloud – but really, you get what you deserve for exercising such bad faith: the musical equivalent of the lingering aftertaste of synthetic sweeteners.”

Review of Britney Spears’ album Circus

Sunday, November 9th, 2008

Waiting for the release of Britney Spears’ album “Circus”? In the meantime while you wait here’s a pre-release review by Gordon Smart writing for The Sun newspaper in the UK: Roll up! Hear Brit’s Circus first. In his review Gordon Smart discusses the track “If You Seek Amy”, explaining:

I’m the only journalist on the planet to have heard the pop princess’s latest offering — and one track in particular left me stunned.

The title If You Seek Amy, seems innocuous enough, but it has an entirely different meaning.

It goes: “All the boys and all the girls want to if you seek Amy”. That clearly doesn’t make much sense.

What you hear, though, is the quite shocking statement: “All the boys and all the girls want to f*** me.”
