Arrested: Nestor Lopez (age:35); Ascension Martinez (age: 32)
Where: Polk County, Florida
Relationship between victim and killers: Nestor Lopez was the work supervisor of Arenas. Ascension Martinez’s relationship with victim unclear.
Motive for murder: It appears murdering Arenas might not have been the intention of Lopez and Martinez. They invited him to go drinking with them but instead drove him out to the area of the phosphate pit where they commenced to violently cut and beat him for breaking into Lopez’s home. Arenas tried to escape by jumping into the pit to swim away. Lopez then fired some gunshots and Arenas disappeared under the water. He was found last Friday floating face down in the pit.
Other details: Lopez and Martinez are being charged with first degree murder and armed kidnapping
