A police officer who was about to be arrested for alleged human rights violations killed himself in front of rolling tv cameras in Argentina. Uttering “Maria, goodbye” to his wife, officer Ferreyra reportedly lifted a .45-caliber revolver to his temple and pulled the trigger.
The 63-year old Argentine killed himself to avoid facing charges connected to “the disappearance, torture and death of dissidents during Argentina’s 1976-83 dictatorship”.
The suicide does not appear to have been an act of impulse. It would seem that Ferreyra planned the dramatic and fatalistic conclusion to his life, possibly with the anguished blessing of his wife Maria who has told reporters that her husband is innocent of the charges that had been made against him, and that he left her with documents to demonstrate his innocence. Mario Ferryra had just concluded an interview with a cable TV station when he shot and killed himself.
