American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology rains on Obama’s Hypoallergenic dog parade

President-elect Barack Obama started a search craze for lists of hypoallergenic dogs when he commented in a post-election news conference last week that the dog he had promised his daughters was going to have to be hypoallergenic because his daughter Malia is allergic to dogs; but according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog.

Dr. Clifford Bassett, a New York City allergy specialist, has stated through the AAAAI that even though some people with allergies claim certain breed of dogs cause them more problems with allergies than others, there’s really no scientific proof to back up the claim. The doctor stated that allergic reactions can sometimes be reduced by frequently grooming and bathing a dog, but allergies to dogs have nothing to do with the common misconceptions about hair and shedding.

The doctor also said that if Malia Obama is indeed allergic to dogs, something that can only be determined by a skin test, then it is not a good idea for the Obama’s to get a dog to take with them to the White house.
